Sowing The Seeds

by | May 27, 2021 | Permaculture Design, The Productive Gardener | 0 comments

With the cold frame built it was time to move to the task of starting to grow some seeds.

I’d amassed a range of almost a hundred seed varieties!
These aren’t the limit of what I’ll be trying to introduce here, but after lots of research and designing they would certainly make a good starting point.

Getting so many varieties to germinate was a pretty big undertaking for one person to manage in a relatively small space. But things are now starting to grow well, and the video above takes you through the steps along the way.

The triumph of seeing tiny green sprouts peering out of the pots is exciting enough for now.

Though it’s a long way from bringing my designs for the site to life.

It’s going to be an interesting journey to transform bare ground and weed patches in to a beautiful and bio-diverse mix of micro-climates.
I can tell already that there’ll be a fine balance to strike. Eventually the variety of plants introduced will take the role of managing pests, controlling weeds, and building healthy soil. But they’ll have to get themselves established while surrounded by pests, weeds and in poor soil.

As things start growing up I’ll bring you more details about the various species, along with the broader design for the site, and what I’m hoping we can learn from it.

To learn more about the site itself, you can watch the Intro Tour here.

Or watch this video to see how I built the cold frame.
